What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is also known as augmentation mammoplasty. It is a surgical procedure that increases the size of your breasts by placing breast implants underneath the breast tissue of chest muscles.
A breast augmentation can be used to simply improve your confidence or correct your breast size after various conditions. Talk to us about your body goals and what you want to achieve, and we can help make it happen. We will explain the process to you so you can be sure that this surgery is the right thing for you. A breast augmentation can help you:
- Boost your confidence in your appearance if you think your breasts are not big enough.
- Correct your breast size if one is bigger than the other, and it impacts the way you dress.
- Adjust the size of your breasts after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss.
It is important to note that breast augmentation is not the same as a breast lift. Breast augmentation won’t correct breasts that are drooping severely. However, you can have a breast lift with a breast augmentation to reach your desired result. We can do these two procedures simultaneously, or you can request separate operations. You can discuss this with us, and we can help you make a decision.
How Does the Procedure Work
During the breast augmentation surgery, we will either use a fat transfer or implants to increase the size of your breasts or restore volume. It can also help to make your breasts more rounded and symmetrical.
We will either make an incision in the crease under your breast, under your arm or around your nipple. Once the incision is made, we will separate the breast tissue from the muscles and connective tissue in your breasts to create a pocket to insert the implant. Once the implant is in place, we will close the incision with stitches and surgical tape.
Type of Breast Implants
During your initial consultation, we will discuss the different types of implants with you, and you can make the decision. We will recommend the most suitable implant for the results you want. There are two types of implants:
1. Silicone Gel Implants
Silicone implants are silicone shells that contain a plastic gel or silicone since the silicone mimics the texture of natural breast tissue. If there is a leak, the gel may stay in the shell or move out of the pocket, but it will not collapse. You have to be 22 years old or older to receive these implants as per FDA regulation.
2. Saline Breast Implant
A saline implant is a silicone shell that contains a saline or salt water solution. They are either pre-filled or filled during the breast augmentation surgery procedure. If a saline implant should leak, it may collapse. However, saline breast implants are known for being firmer and more uniform than silicone implants. They are FDA-approved for women over 18 years of age.
Before the Procedure
During the initial consultation, we will guide you on what should be done before the procedure takes place. You should avoid aspirin or medication that may increase bleeding. We will also ask you to stop smoking for a few weeks before and after the surgery to increase the success of the procedure. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home from the hospital after the surgery and stay with you for at least one night to assist you with routine tasks that may be difficult to do after the surgery.
It is important to make mention of any medical conditions you have or medication you are taking during the initial consultation so we can provide a suitable solution for you. This is also the best time to discuss your expectations and desired outcomes for breast augmentation.
Recovery
A breast augmentation procedure is usually done under general anesthetic and performed on an outpatient basis, so you can be mobile again within a few hours after the procedure. However, you have to avoid strenuous physical activities or anything that will raise your blood pressure for about two weeks after the operation. We will recommend a surgical support bra to help you through the recovery process. Keep in mind that your breasts may be physically sensitive while you recover. Depending on the demands of your job, you may only be able to return after a few weeks of recovery.
We will also prescribe medication well in advance so you can have them ready after the surgery. This medication is usually antibiotics to prevent infections and painkillers to ensure that the recovery goes smoothly. You may need to come for follow-up treatments to remove drainage tubes and stitches if they don’t dissolve on their own.
