Los Angeles Tummy Tuck in Beverly Hills

Weight changes, pregnancy, and the aging process can turn a smooth, firm, flat tummy into something you’re embarrassed or rather than proud of. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is surgery to tighten and smooth loose, hanging skin and remove excess fat. When needed, the surgery also repairs abdominal muscles that have separated and weakened. Tummy tucks eliminate flab, wrinkles, and bulging to restore a younger-looking and more toned midsection profile.

Dr. David Feldmar, at Feldmar Aesthetics, performs tummy tuck surgery in Beverly Hills to help women and men in the Los Angeles area look better and feel better about themselves. Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Feldmar combines art, science, and deep expertise in his medical work to create beautiful, natural-looking results for his patients. He and his staff run their practice to be a warm and welcoming experience, where patients feel comfortable, listened to, and appreciated for who they are.

Why You Might Consider a Tummy Tuck in Beverly Hills with Dr. Feldmar

Pregnancy and weight gain can stretch the skin of the abdomen beyond its limits of resilience. After a child is born or a significant amount of weight is lost, the skin can remain loose, wrinkled, and saggy, even hanging in folds. Abdominal fat can accumulate in ways that resist diet and exercise. The abdominal muscles can separate and weaken to the point where no toning or strength-building routine can eliminate the bulge and restore a flat, firm belly.

All of these stretching, sagging, and bulging changes in the tummy can happen even without having children or gaining and losing large amounts of weight—simply as a result of the aging process or genetics. The good news is that all of them can be corrected with a tummy tuck procedure.

Planning Your Tummy Tuck Surgery

Your initial consultation with Dr. Feldmar is a key step in understanding whether tummy tuck surgery is right for you and, if so, in planning the safest and most effective approach for the procedure. In your consultation, Dr. Feldmar will ask questions to understand your goals for the surgery and your medical history, examine you to understand your anatomy and the quality of your skin, and make recommendations based on his medical expertise. He will explain the surgical approach he recommends, and what you can expect throughout the process.  Dr. Feldmar’s goal, and the goal of everyone at Feldmar Aesthetics, is to help you make informed decisions, have realistic expectations, and feel comfortable through each step in your experience.

A tummy tuck can:

  • Tighten and smooth abdominal skin that has stretched, sagged, and wrinkled
  • Remove excess fat from the midsection, eliminating pockets of fat that persist after diet and exercise
  • Flatten a bulging belly by repairing and tightening abdominal muscles that have separated and weakened
  • Pull in the waistline for more definition, creating a slimmer look
  • Increase clothing options, allowing for a better fit and greater confidence
  • Improve confidence and self-esteem

Are You a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

In your consultation with Dr. Feldmar, based on his examination and your medical history, he will tell you if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck.  You are probably a good candidate if you:

  • Are unhappy with the appearance of your abdomen because of loose, hanging skin; pockets of fat that remain even after losing weight with diet and exercise; or a bulge due to separated abdominal muscles
  • Are in generally good health, with no medical conditions that increase your risks
  • Are not significantly overweight and at a stable weight
  • Do not smoke, or are able to quit smoking for several weeks before and after your surgery
  • Have realistic expectations for the results of the surgery

How Is Tummy Tuck Surgery Performed?

Tummy tuck surgery is performed in our state-of-the-art Swall Surgery Center in Beverly Hills, designed and built to our specifications to provide safe, high-quality, personalized patient care. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, using general anesthesia.

In a traditional (or full) tummy tuck, an incision is made across the lower part of the abdomen from hipbone to hipbone, just above the pubic area, and a second incision is made around the navel. If the abdominal muscles have separated, they are pulled together, tightened, and reconnected to flatten the belly. If excess fat is present, it is removed via liposuction. Once changes to the underlying muscles and fat are complete, excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is pulled smooth and reattached. The navel may be moved upward to a younger-looking position. A traditional, or full tummy tuck corrects significant skin sagging, both below and above the belly button, and takes 3 to 5 hours to perform.

In a mini or partial tummy tuck, a shorter incision is made just above the pubic area, not extending to the hipbones. The skin of the lower abdomen, below the belly button, is tightened and smoothed. Excess fat may be removed with a tummy tuck and liposuction. A mini or partial tummy tuck corrects moderately loose skin below the belly button and takes about 2 hours to perform.

Most patients, when they have recovered from the anesthesia, can go home. In some cases, an overnight stay at the surgical center is recommended. When you are ready to go home, you’ll need to have a friend or family member drive you and stay with you for at least the first night.

What to Expect After Your Tummy Tuck Surgery

Plan to rest at home for the first week after your surgery and to have someone available to help you with household tasks. You won’t be able to lift anything heavy for a few weeks, so will likely need help with shopping, cooking, and caring for young children. It’s common to feel some soreness at first, which can be managed with pain medication. To support your tummy tuck recovery, a special compression garment or elastic bandage may be prescribed for wrapping around the treated area. This helps to minimize swelling and support the new contours. Thin drainage tubes may also be placed for the first stage of healing as a way to reduce swelling.

Dr. Feldmar will give you instructions on how to care for the wounds to prevent infection, when to return for follow-up appointments, and how to gradually resume your normal activities. Most patients are able to return to work after 2 weeks. You can start to exercise again about 2 weeks after your surgery, beginning with lighter activities, then gradually build up to your regular exercise routine at about six weeks. Strenuous exercises that use your abdominal muscles, like crunches or weightlifting, may need more time. Recovery times for a mini tummy tuck are a bit faster than for a full tummy tuck.

You’ll notice the improvements to your abdomen right away and will see the final results at about six months when all of the post-surgical swelling has disappeared.

Tummy Tuck Surgery FAQS in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, CA

The improvements made in a tummy tuck are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight. Significant weight gain or a future pregnancy can stretch your skin again and cause your abdominal muscles to weaken and separate.

Tummy tuck costs will vary due to the extent of the procedure. In your consultation, Dr. Feldmar will review all of the costs with you, including the costs of the surgery and anesthesia, so you can make a fully informed decision.

The main incision for a tummy tuck is placed very low across the abdomen, just above the pubic area, where the resulting scar is easily concealed under clothing or a bathing suit. In a full tummy tuck, you’ll have a second scar around your belly button, which will not be noticeable once the scar has faded to be close to your skin tone.

The best candidates for a tummy tuck those who are at or near a healthy weight. Some excess fat may be removed using liposuction, but a tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure. The surgery removes only targeted pockets of diet- and exercise-resistant fat in the abdomen and waistline.

A tummy tuck, like all plastic surgery procedures, carries some risks of infection, blood clots, and poor healing. These tummy tuck risks are minimized by careful screening for existing health conditions in candidates for the procedure and in the care taken in performing the surgery. You can help reduce the risk of complications by carefully following Dr. Feldmar’s post-operative care instructions.

A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure but can help contour your abdomen and remove excess skin and fat. It’s essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle for long-term results.

Sutures used during a tummy tuck are typically dissolvable and do not require removal. If non-dissolvable sutures are used, we will remove them at a follow-up appointment.

A great tummy tuck result should include a flatter, more contoured abdomen, improved waistline definition, and well-placed incisions that fade with time. Natural-looking results that align with your body’s proportions are essential.

Swelling is a common part of the recovery process. It typically subsides gradually over several weeks to months, and we will provide guidance on managing it.
