Facial Fat Grafting in Beverly Hills & Los Angeles
Facial fat grafting, or autologous fat transfer, is a treatment that combines liposuction to remove unwanted fat from one part of the body—the waistline, buttocks, thighs, or below the chin—and processing it for injection into the lips, cheeks, or other facial areas to add fullness or smooth wrinkles and lines. Fat grafting for facial contouring offers two cosmetic benefits: the slimming effect of body contouring from liposuction and facial rejuvenation from fat grafting.

What Is Facial Fat Grafting?
Facial fat grafting or autologous fat grafting is a cosmetic surgical procedure to enhance the face to look more youthful while also removing unwanted excess fat from another part of the body. It does this by combining liposuction, for fat removal, with the processing and injection of some of the harvested fat. The fat injected with facial fat grafting can add volume where is lacking, fill and smooth facial lines and creases, and make other cosmetic enhancements, such as chin augmentation, facial contouring, and fat grafting for facial scars to smooth recessed facial scars, making them less noticeable.
Facial fat grafting is similar to treatment with dermal fillers, which can also add volume to areas of the face and smooth facial lines and wrinkles. But while the results of treatment with dermal fillers last for a few months, the changes made with fat grafting are long-lasting or permanent. Also, while dermal fillers are manufactured products, fat grafting uses only your own natural tissue, introducing no foreign material into your body with no risk of allergic reaction.
How Does Fat Transfer Work?
Fat transfer is a safe, simple procedure that provides you with a natural solution to address volume loss. During your procedure, Dr. Feldmar will perform liposuction to remove fat from a donor area on your bodies, such as the buttocks or abdomen. This fat will then be injected into the area you would like to improve. Since your own natural fat cells are used, there is no risk of an allergic reaction.
This procedure is very effective at improving the appearance of:
- Hollow cheeks
- Deep smile and frown lines
- Thin lips
- Skin depressions
- Contour irregularities
- Botched prior liposuction
- Aging hands
- Fat transfer can also be used to correct complications from a previous liposuction procedure. Dr. Feldmar can transfer fat back to the liposuction treatment site to improve the appearance of this area.

You might benefit from facial fat grafting if you’re bothered by areas of stubborn fat—on the abdomen, waistline, thighs, hips, or under the chin—and would like to address signs of aging or other cosmetic issues on your face. Facial fat grafting is effective at improving the appearance of:
- Flat or hollow cheeks
- Hollows below the eyes, fat grafting for tear troughs
- Sunken temples, fat grafting for temple augmentation
- Deep smile and frown lines, fat grafting for nasolabial folds and marionette lines
- Fat grafting for facial wrinkles

- Recessed scars and other skin depressions (including acne scars)
- Weak or recessed chin (fat grafting for chin augmentation)
- Irregular facial contours
Other benefits of facial fat grafting include:
- Long-lasting or permanent results, unlike injectable dermal filler treatments, which must be refreshed every few months
- The use of your own fat tissue, a natural filler for the face, which eliminates the possibility of allergic reactions

- Little or no downtime
Fat injection for facial rejuvenation is not limited to improving facial appearance. The fat removed via liposuction can also be used to add volume to the breasts, buttocks, or the backs of aging hands. What to Expect During Your Facial Fat Grafting Procedure?
Facial fat grafting is performed as an outpatient procedure, using local or general anesthesia, in our state-of-the-art Swall Surgery Center in Beverly Hills.
The first step of a facial fat transfer procedure is liposuction. Before starting the liposuction procedure, Dr. Feldmar will mark the targeted areas to ensure naturally contoured results. Once the anesthesia has taken full effect, Dr. Feldmar will make small incisions in the areas to be treated through which to insert a thin tube or cannula. The fat is broken up and extracted through the cannula. The procedure usually takes between one and three hours, depending on how many areas are treated and the amount of fat removed. Once the fat has been removed as planned, the incisions are closed.
The next steps in facial fat grafting are to process and purify the harvested fat, so that only whole, undamaged fat cells are used, and to inject this purified fat into the areas where fat grafting for facial volume is being addressed, line and creases erased, or scars made less noticeable.
When you have recovered from the anesthesia, you can go home. Arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you.
What to Expect After Your Facial Fat Grafting Procedure
During your facial fat grafting recovery, you will be recovering both from liposuction and fat injection for facial rejuvenation. It’s common to feel some soreness at first, which can be managed with pain medication. You can also expect to experience some swelling, both in the area treated with liposuction and at the injection sites in your face.
Dr. Feldmar will provide instructions on caring for the liposuction incisions to prevent infection, returning for follow-up appointments, and gradually resuming your normal activities. Most patients can return to work a few days after their facial fat grafting procedure. The timing of resuming activity and exercise will depend on the extent of your liposuction treatment.
Not all of the added fat will stay where it has been injected. A portion will be processed out of your body as waste. Because of this, extra fat is injected, which, together with the initial swelling, will make your face appear fuller at first. You’ll see the final results at about six months when all of the post-surgical swelling has disappeared and only the added fat that has found a permanent blood supply remains.
