What Is a Body Lift?
A body lift is a plastic surgery procedure to improve the body’s contours and appearance by correcting loose, sagging skin and reducing pockets of excess fat, typically after significant weight loss. Each body lift is customized to the needs of the patient, addressing the areas of the body with skin laxity and unwanted fat. Those might include the chest, breasts, back, or upper arms in an upper body lift; the waist, abdomen, buttocks, thighs, or groin in a lower body lift; or any combination of those areas in a total body lift.
A body lift usually involves lifting and toning underlying muscles and connective tissue to reshape the body structures over which the smoothed and tightened skin will be laid. The results of a comprehensive body lift are natural-looking and long-lasting when you maintain a stable weight after treatment.
Why You Might Consider a Body Lift in Beverly Hills with Dr. Feldmar
After losing a significant amount of weight — 100 pounds or more — it’s common to be left with loose hanging skin. Skin stretches with weight gain, and beyond a certain point lacks the resilience to adjust to the body’s thinner contours when the weight is lost. You might benefit from a body lift if you’ve lost weight and are bothered by sagging skin and pockets of excess fat anywhere from your shoulders to your thighs.
An upper body lift can correct:
- Stretched, sagging, or hanging skin and areas of excess fat on your chest, back, or upper arms
- Sagging breasts or breasts that have dropped to a lower position
- Chafing from hanging skin or sagging breasts
An upper body lift can be combined with breast surgery to reshape, augment, or reduce the size of the breasts (including both male and female breast reduction).
A lower body lift can correct:
- Stretched, sagging, or hanging skin and areas of excess fat on your abdomen, waist, lower back, hips, groin, buttocks, or thighs
- A bulging abdomen caused by stretched or separated abdominal muscles
- Sagging or poorly defined buttocks
- Chafing from folds of hanging skin
A body lift can provide the final step in your weight loss transformation, giving you:
- A slimmer, younger appearance
- Renewed pride in your body and your appearance
- The freedom to wear the clothes you prefer
- The ability to move and exercise more comfortably
- Reduced irritation and risk of infection from chafing

Planning Your Body Lift
Your initial consultation with Dr. Feldmar is a key step in understanding whether a body lift is right for you and, if so, in planning the safest and most effective approach for the procedure. In your consultation with Dr. Feldmar, he’ll ask questions to understand your goals for the surgery and your medical history, including all of the medications you take. He will examine you to assess the extent of skin stretching, the elasticity of your skin, and the locations of unwanted fat. Based on his examination and an understanding of your goals for the procedure, Dr. Feldmar will explain the surgical approach he recommends, and what you can expect throughout the process.
Dr. Feldmar’s goal, and the goal of everyone at Feldmar Aesthetics, is to help you make informed decisions, have realistic expectations, and feel comfortable throughout each step of your experience.
Are You a Good Candidate for a Body Lift?
As part of your consultation with Dr. Feldmar, he will tell you whether a body lift is an appropriate and safe option for you. He will make this determination based on your medical and weight-loss history and the extent and locations of skin laxity.
You are probably a good candidate for a body lift if you:
- Have lost a significant amount of weight and are bothered by loose, hanging skin
- Are in generally good health, with no medical conditions that might increase your risks from the surgery
- Are not significantly overweight and are at a stable weight
- Do not smoke, or are willing to quit smoking for several weeks before and after your surgery
- Have realistic expectations for the results of the surgery
It’s important to note that a body lift is not a weight-loss procedure. Instead, it is a body-contouring treatment performed after you have lost weight and when you are within a healthy weight range. Areas of excess fat may be removed as part of the procedure, using liposuction, but this is for targeted slimming and contouring, not overall weight loss.

How is Body Lift Surgery Performed?
Body lift surgery is performed in our state-of-the-art Swall Surgery Center in Beverly Hills, designed and built to our specifications to provide safe, high-quality, personalized patient care. Body lift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia.
Depending on the parts of the body being treated and the improvements being made, Dr. Feldmar uses different surgical approaches, often in combination. Dr Feldmar will review his surgical plan with you as part of your consultation, including where incisions will be made and how long the procedure will likely take.
- An upper body lift may involve incisions on the back, the lower part of the breasts, the armpits, or the sides of the chest.
- A lower body lift may involve an incision around the torso or, for a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, from hip to hip just above the pubic area.
- An arm lift usually involves an incision along the inside of the upper arm, from the armpit to the elbow.
- A thigh lift might involve incisions in the groin area, or from the groin to the hips.
Once the required incision has been made, underlying muscles and connective tissues are repositioned and tightened, excess fat and skin are removed, and the remaining skin is reattached to create a smooth, natural-looking, and attractive contour.
After closing the incisions and placing dressings, you will be moved to a specialized recovery unit. When you have recovered from the anesthesia, you’ll be able to go home, if you have appropriate help available, or you’ll be released to an aftercare center. Dr. Feldmar will discuss these recovery needs with you as part of your consultation. Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may need skilled nursing care for the first two days, either at home or in an aftercare center.

What to Expect After Your Body Lift Surgery
You can expect some bruising and swelling in the days immediately after the surgery. Dr. Feldmar will help minimize this by fitting you with compression garments at the end of your surgery. Drains may be placed in the incisions to remove excess fluids during the early stages of healing. It’s also common to experience some pain and discomfort at first, which can be managed with pain medication.
You will need help at home for the first few days, as movement will be difficult, and you’ll have difficulty with ordinary tasks. Most patients choose to take two or three weeks off from work, and some require even more time.
Dr. Feldmar will give you instructions for your body lift recovery, including how to care for the wounds to prevent infection, how to sit and lie comfortably, when to return for follow-up appointments, and how to gradually resume your normal activities.

Body Lift Surgery FAQS in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, CA
Yes. Body lift surgery does leave scars. Dr. Feldmar will explain where incisions will be placed when you meet with him for your consultation. He will plan the surgery so any resulting scars will be easily hidden by clothing.
The results of a body lift are permanent if you maintain a stable weight with healthy eating and exercise habits. Regaining weight can cause your skin to stretch again, which may undo some of the improvements the surgery has made. As you age, of course, your skin will naturally lose resilience, but the extreme looseness and sagging the surgery corrects will be gone.
As with any cosmetic procedure, body lift surgery carries some risks. These include the possibility of infection, bleeding, or an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. Dr. Feldmar will discuss these risks as part of your consultation with him. It’s important to understand the risks before undergoing any elective surgery.
The cost of body lift surgery varies with the extent of the changes being made and the complexity of the procedure. They include the surgeon’s fee and the costs of anesthesia, the surgical facility, medications, and garments worn after surgery. The costs of cosmetic surgery procedures are not typically covered by medical insurance. Dr. Feldmar will explain the costs in detail as part of your consultation with him.
